July 2018 at the South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society

July has seemed to have gone by very quickly here at South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society. Our office has seen steady client traffic come through our door this month.

Though our numbers for food bank has dropped, which is a typical pattern for the food bank when the weather starts to get warmer, our numbers for walk-ins, group workshops and one-on-one have been steady.

Earlier on in the month, on July 12th, we had the National Executive Director from Ottawa come to Ashcroft. Kassandra Churcher, the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, came to BC to visit the Pacific Region Elizabeth Fry Societies. Her first stop was in Ashcroft where she spent the morning with staff and Board Chair learning about the issues that the local Elizabeth Fry Societies were seeing and assisting with.

After visiting Ashcroft, Kassandra went to visit the Elizabeth Fry Societies in Kamloops and Vernon.

On July 13th, because of Kassandra Churcher’s visit to BC, all the Pacific Region Elizabeth Fry Societies’ executive directors and respective Board Chairs, descended upon Kelowna for a meeting.

Yoriko Susanj, who is the Secretary of the Pacific Region, also went to the meeting to represent South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry at the table for this meeting.

Yoriko has also been busy meeting with the Community Wellness Manager of the United Way, Krista Billy this month to discuss plans for a Community BBQ. Discussion has been productive and a Community BBQ at the South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry office will be on August 1 (Wed.) from 11am to 2pm! Come and join us if you can!

Various support circles / groups that have continues through the summer are still well attended. We have running throughout the summer are: Grandparents Supporting Grandparents, Ashcroft Indian Band Community Kitchen and Coffee Hour.

Please look at our Events page for the next dates for these Circles/Groups!

Things that South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society staff have noticed are that some who come through the door seeking assistance are more and more in a reactive state … Something has happened in their lives and so they come seeking help in response to that happening.

In many cases, the pattern that we are noticing is that this “reaction” can be prevented with self-care and/or emotional/mental maintenance.

We would like the community to know that the staff here at South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry can be your support for that emotional and/or mental maintenance, we can be a form of your self-care.
